we be sushi
nb: we ate at the 1071 valencia st location.
motivation: spontaneous lunch with fellow enjoyer-of-professional-introspection mp. ok, so we're both unemployed at the moment and wanted to talk about it, and we be is just around the corner from his place. [just for the record, i intentionally quit my last full-time job and actually have three part-time gigs keeping me from being a true lady of leisure. so you there, who wants to help me continue to support my inconvenient sushi habit at this precarious time, drop me a line and i'll either make a lunch date with you too, or connect you to my paypal account. :)]
quality: mediocre. we be promises to give you "sushi like your mom used to make!", and i'm not sure how they knew my mother was an italian from genoa, but it explains a lot. i never go there expecting more than some fresh-enough fish, quick service, and low prices (grazie, mama!), so i'm rarely disappointed. we had a spider roll (very large pieces that mp relented and used his hands to eat), rainbow roll (tasty-ish), tekka maki (good ol' reliable tuna), seaweed salad, and unagi nigiri. we be includes a we-be-onioned miso soup with your meal, which i rarely touch. the service is always pretty friendly, though they were ushering us out a bit hastily, like they wanted to close because it was 2:00 or something. whatevs.
flirtability: low. mp is adorable and cute and very taken and also has trouble making prolonged eye contact, all of which meant that this was very clearly a business lunch. plus the shaggy hells angel at the other table was really into his guardian article.
all in all, we be sushi will give you a no-frills, adequate meal for the price, and they'll smile at you as they do. check em out when you're poor and hungry.
itadakimasu!
